RACK cabinet, telecommunication cabinet, 19″ cabinet, server cabinet, patch panel cabinet — all these names refer to the same type of cabinet that can be found in data centers, offices, logistics centers, and various industrial environments. What is its purpose, what is it made of, and why is it so important for the proper functioning of IT systems? The answers to these questions can be found below.

RACK Cabinet — What is it and What is it Used For?

A RACK cabinet is an integral part of the equipment in a computer server room or data storage center. It is commonly used to organize IT equipment, store networking devices, servers, UPS power generators, or LAN network components. It plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of telecommunications networks. The purpose of a server cabinet is to effectively protect electronic equipment and ensure its stable operation. For this reason, it should be found in any office or other place where data is stored on various electronic media.

RACK Cabinets — Advantages

The installation of a server cabinet serves another important purpose. It is used for organizing the structural cabling system inside the building. The RACK cabinet serves as a central point where telecommunication cables are gathered. This ensures that all devices and cables are neatly organized in one place, making it easy to access them. This is a key factor in case of a failure, as the technician managing the system can quickly locate the source of the problem and fix the issue.

RACK Cabinet Construction

A telecommunication cabinet is a type of enclosure designed for telecommunication equipment, featuring a characteristic mounting system. Its parameters are defined by clear standards established by the EIA (Electronic Industries Association). According to these guidelines, all RACK server cabinets have a width of 19” (48.26 cm) between the rails. When it comes to the dimensions of a RACK cabinet, its height is measured in rack units (U). The most commonly purchased hanging cabinets range from 4U to 18U, which can be used as the main distribution point in homes or large businesses. On the other hand, a standing RACK cabinet with a dimension of 42U is the most popular choice among customers who need to organize a large amount of equipment.

Types of RACK Cabinets

There are different types of server cabinets available on the market. Among them, we distinguish between wall-mounted and freestanding cabinets. Wall-mounted rack cabinets are usually used as an intermediate distribution point. They are used to distribute cabling in a given area (known as horizontal cabling). In contrast, a freestanding rack cabinet offers more capabilities, which is why it is used to connect these areas (known as vertical cabling). Therefore, freestanding cabinets serve as the main distribution points in companies. In addition to the types mentioned above, securityNET also offers cabinets with glass or perforated doors. Perforated doors are a good choice when storing large quantities of active devices that release heat. For this reason, it is also important to consider ventilation for the rack cabinet. Cooling for a rack cabinet can be factory-installed, or a fan panel for rack cabinets can be purchased separately. Regardless of the option we choose, it’s crucial to ensure proper ventilation to protect the equipment from overheating.
